Famous Elevator Puzzle

A man who lives on the tenth floor takes the elevator down to the first floor every morning and goes to work. In the evening, when he comes back; on a rainy day, or if there are other people in the elevator, he goes to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the seventh floor and walks up three flights of stairs to his apartment.
Can you explain why?
For discussion
Here are a few answers: 1) Either that he wants exercise and the stairs are outside so when it rains, he doesn’t want to get wet and rides the elevator. 2) When people are around, he likes to visit with them as they are neighbors and he rides with them instead of taking time out to have his walk. 3) IF he could be a midget, then A) he must be a very unpractical midget, because he makes the commute EVERY DAY to work! Otherwise, he would carry a method (like the umbrella theory) to ensure that he can press the higher elevator button every day. B) Many elevators are installed with their buttons about three feet high and lower, enough for a working midget. Not specified. C) He could probably jump, if he’s in good enough physical shape to work every day. What about his lunchbox? I take lunch with me to work…not hard to carry.
4) He likes the city view and goes outside to the stairs to see the sunset and city lights (“in the evening” when he returns…), but is also a friendly fellow and visits when other folks are around. What? It doesn’t say where the stairs are! :D
